Raman Reddy's 'In Defence of the "Extracts from the Lives of Sri Aurobindo by Peter Heehs" is one of the most rational analysis and precise interpretation of the extracts that were circulated in order to prove that whatever Peter Heehs has written in the Lives of Sri Aurobindo is absolutely true and faithful. Mr. Reddy has wonderfully pointed out the flaws that exist in the circulated extracts as well. It is claimed by the pro-Peter Heehs party that everyone is speaking or writing against the book without even reading it. I would like to inform them that there are many (like Ananda Reddy and Narad) who has protested after reading the book. This book comes as a negative surprise from a person who is associated with the Sri Aurobindo Ashram for thirty-seven years and it is evident from his book as well as his other articles published in the Archives Journal years ago that despite claiming himself to be a sadhak of the Integral Yoga, he has little for Sri Aurobindo and the Mother. Years ago he had claimed that Sri Aurobindo's memory had failed when he was asked about his place of birth. We have read the statements written by Jugal Kishore Mukherjee and Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya in the mid 1980s in which they had protested against Peter Heehs's articles on Sri Aurobindo. For those who do not know, I would like to narrate an incident. Nirodbaran was quite disturbed and annoyed at whatever Peter Heehs was writing so one day he called Peter Heehs to his room and asked him: "Are you a disciple?" Pat came the reply from Peter: "I am a historian." So, Peter Heehs's basic attitude was clear from the very beginning.
Mr. Reddy is being criticized by the argumentative scholars for being emotional and stating that many of the followers of the Path have fallen sick due to the shock they have received by reading this book. But as a matter of fact, many of the true children of the Mother and Sri Aurobindo indeed fell sick and I can vouch for that. Please understand that no children can tolerate the insults inflicted upon his parents. If the Lives of Sri Aurobindo had been penned by an outsider, there would hardly had been any controversy. But since this book has been written by an inmate of the Ashram, the reactions are so strong. Writing a controversial book is not a crime; it is the misrepresentation of facts which is termed as a crime and that's exactly what Peter Heehs has done. This book reminds me of one of Sri Aurobindo's aphorisms: "Then a child shall destroy her." While penning this so-called scholarly biography, Peter Heehs has mentalized supramental realizations. And that is wrong.
I appeal to everyone: instead of spitting venom against Peter Heehs and fighting among ourselves like cats and dogs, why do n't we concentrate on our sadhana? The 1st of January 2009 marked the 40th anniversary of the manifestation of the Overmind Consciousness. The Force is here; the Grace is here. Let's all try to be receptive enough to receive the Force and Grace. By fighting like this, we are deviating from our actual Path and are on the verge of becoming what the Mother never wanted us to become. Let the Court decide the fate of Peter Heehs and his book and the Grace of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother decide our spiritual destiny.
