I agree with you that "....he is not an Ashram-sponsored historian to write such a book, with a kind of an official stamp of the work approved or supported by the Ashram". "Historian from the Ashram" is more appropriate. I believe there is also the disclaimer which absolves the Ashram from any controversy relating to the content. Clearly the Ashram had no hand(or head!) in this.
