My take on this issue is slightly different but aligned with Tushar's pragmatic stance.
If we want to merge with Pakistan, then we must be willing to accept their people as part of us. If we can't accept the people, we should not covet their land under the pretext of some greater spiritual destiny. This is like putting the cart before the horse and will only topple the cart.
As it stands today, this division seems intractable because there are religious forces on both sides of the border which wish to dominate each other ("My God is better than your God..."). Even if we succeed in tamping down the Hindutva brigade on our side, we can't pacify the Islamic brigade on the other side. It's going to require a miracle to overcome this acrimony and forge a union harmonized on a different albeit higher basis. Perhaps Time will reveal some way to make this happen. Perhaps the Fate of the nation will turn in some unexpected manner. Until such a moment arrives, this debate makes little sense and it is infinitely better to focus on issues of immediate and practical importance.
