Savitri: the Light of the Supreme
Re: Vithoba of Pandharpur

Dear Deshpande-ji, After reading this article, I let some time pass to recapitualate some old memories. In 1958-1959 Mother and Pranab-da used to see cinemas first in the Play-ground as a censor-board and then allow films for children. During this period the memorable series of Marathi films seen is yet fresh in my memory. After all, - ' The days of our youth are the days of our glory.' First I think it was Sant Eknath in B/W. After seeing the first film Mother was so touched that She asked to bring all the Marathi saints' films in continuation. So we had four marathi films , - 1) sant Eknath 2) Sant Gnaneshwar 3) Sant Tukaram 4) Swami Ramdas Out of these, the films on Sant Gnaneshwar and Sant Tukaram are as yet fresh. The tragic jala-samadhi of the parents when the children were young; The arrival of Changdev riding on a tiger, his letter to Gnanadev all blank, Gnanadev receiving him flying on a wall with all brothers and sister are as yet living. I personally had liked Sant Gananashwar more than any other films in this series. However, Sant Tukaram has remained more living due to the comment of the Mother. When Shivaji was in hot pursuit by the Moghuls, he took refuge in the house of Sant Tukaram. Then when an army of soldiers came out to defend Shivaji, Mother said, - ' Here is the time when Tukaram-ji's prayer to the Mother, brought the power and Shakti aspect in Tukaram-ji's life.' There is another interesting episode after seeing this film. After a couple of days, Mother after completing her class in the Play-ground, came out to go to her Green-room. Now between the doors of the class-room and Her Green-room was sitting young Ashok Patel, the brother of Anjana. He was leaning against the wall, with closed eyes, having imaginary karatals in his hands and singing merrily, ' Vitthal, Vitthal, Vitthal !' Mother asked everybody to be totally silent with Her finger on Her mouth. Mother watched for full 10 sec. or so of the fun and then quietly entered the Green-room. Though I am of the same age as Ashok, I was probably playing on the ground. It was long after that Amita-di who was behind Mother, had told us this story in the class. This is how Vithoba of Pandharpur has remained fresh in my memory, esp. the music and song of ' Pandurang Jaani !'
