As a digression let me make some observations about Cripps mission which would be interesting to all admirers of Sri Aurobindo. A prelude to the Cripps proposal and an impelling force behind was an historic event that occurred on an auspicious day. The year was 1941. It was Sri Aurobindo’s birthday, Aug 15, in India and Aug 14 in Newfoundland where a historic meeting was taking place which would later serve as the foundation of organizations and international treaties that would the shape the world. Two statesmen British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt had come together and issued a joint declaration which came to be known as the Atlantic Charter. Its salient feature was the pledge to "ensure life, liberty, independence and religious freedom and to preserve the rights of man and justice". This was a prelude to the formation of the United Nations - it formed the basis of the United Nations Charter. In a joint statement of peace aims the two statesmen had included a section that said that they(Roosevelt and Churchill) respected the rights of all peoples to choose their own form of government and that they wished to see sovereign rights and self-government restored to those people that were forcibly deprived of them.
